Jewish Tallit
Jewish People: What is your opinion of the situation at the Kotel?
The Women of the Wall are a feminist group in Israel promoting equality for women at the Kotel. Recently there was an incident at the Kotel where a woman was arrested for wearing tallit. Please read the article and give your opinion: http://jezebel.com/5408520/israeli-woman-arrested-for-praying-at-the-western-wall?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:%20jezebel/full%20%28Jezebel&utm_content=Google%20Reader
This is meant for a religious discussion. If I see anti-semitic remarks or people are verbally abusing each other, they will be reported.
I do not want to share my opinion directly because I want to see what other people have to say, but I am an Egalitarian Conservative Jew, so you can sort of assume what my opinion is.
A tallit is meant for a man to wear to pray. Women can fulfill mitzvot without it and pray in the morning without it.
Let us remember that women and men are forbidden to dress like the opposite sex. Tallit are a man's article of clothing technically, since they are cloth and worn as shawls. So it would seem logical to say that a woman wearing a (man's) tallit is a violation of the prohibition.
I think it is not right, though, that she be arrested for it. She will face enough social censure without involving the police. Overreaction, in my opinion.
