Orthodox Russia

Orthodox Russia

$32.98

Orthodox Christianity came to Russia from Byzantium in 988, and in the ensuing centuries it has become such a fixture of the Russian cultural landscape that any discussion of Russian character or history inevitably must take its influence into account. Orthodox Russia is a timely volume that brings together some of the best contemporary scholarship on Russian Orthodox beliefs and practices covering a broad historical period-from the Muscovite era through the immediate aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. Studies of Russian Orthodoxy have typically focused on doctrinal contro-versies or institutional developments. Orthodox Russia concentrates on lived religious experience-how Orthodoxy touched the lives of a wide variety of subjects of the Russian state, from clerics awaiting the Apocalypse in the fifteenth century and nuns adapting to the attacks on organized religion under the Soviets to unlettered military servitors at the court of Ivan the Terrible and workers, peasants, and soldiers in the last years of the imperial regime. Melding traditionally distinct approaches, the volume allows us to see Orthodoxy not as a static set of rigidly applied rules and dictates but as a lived, adaptive, and flexible system. Orthodox Russia offers a much-needed, up-to-date general survey of the subject, one made possible by the opening of archives in Russia after 1991. Contributors include Laura Engelstein, Michael S. Flier, Daniel H. Kaiser, Nadieszda Kizenko, Eve Levin, Gary Marker, Daniel Rowland, Vera Shevzov, Thomas N. Tentler, Isolde Thyrêt, William G. Wagner, and Paul W. Werth.

Jimmy O'Pharrow is a boxing trainer and one of the founders of the Starrett City Boxing Club, who describes one of his most promising fighters, Dmitriy Salita, like so: Looks Russian, prays Jewish, fights Black. Salita was born in Odessa, Ukraine, and moved with his family to Brooklyn, NY, when he was a boy, as his father didn't want his children held back by widespread Russian anti-Semitism. Growing up in a rough-and-tumble section of Brooklyn, Salita developed a passion for boxing, and made a reputation as a fighter to be reckoned with in Brooklyn gyms. After winning New York's Golden Gloves championship, Salita turned pro, but he also made a renewed commitment to his faith, and while he's become a hero to the Big Apple's Russian and Ukrainian exile community as well as to devout Jews, he also struggles to remain true to Orthodox Judaism; as Salita himself once said, If anyone wants a whuppin' from me, they got to wait until after sundown. Orthodox Stance is a documentary from filmmaker Jason Hutt that explores Salita's remarkable life and his journey to faith; the film received its world premiere at the 2007 Silverdocs Film Festival, a competition founded by the American Film Institute and the Discovery Channel. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Orthodox Christians in America

Orthodox Christians in America

$16.48

Although there are over 200 million Orthodox Christians worldwide, 4 million of whom live in the United States, their history, beliefs, and practices are unfamiliar to most Americans. This book outlines the evolution of Orthodox Christian dogma, which emerged for the first time in 33 A.D., before shifting its focus to American Orthodoxy--a tradition that traces its origins back to the first Greek and Russian immigrants in the 1700s. The narrative follows the momentous events and notable individuals in the history of the Orthodox dioceses in the U.S., including Archbishop Iakovos' march for civil rights alongside Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Orthodox missionaries' active opposition to the mistreatment of native Inuit in Alaska, the quest for Orthodox unity in America, the massive influx of converts since the 1960s, and the often strained relationship between American Orthodox groups and the mother churches on the other side of the Atlantic. Erickson explains the huge impact Orthodox Christianity has had on the history of immigration, and how the religion has changed as a result of the American experience. Lively, engaging, and thoroughly researched, the book unveils an insightful portrait of an ancient faith in a new world.

Orthodox Dogmatic Theology

Orthodox Dogmatic Theology

$15.98

ORTHODOX DOGMATIC THEOLOGY is a book written with one purpose: to inspire, to warm the heart, to lift one above the petty preoccupations of earth in order to glimpse the divine beginning and end of all things. This has always been the purpose and intent of theology: to give one the energy and encouragement to struggle towards God and our heavenly homeland. The original Russian version has long been regarded as a standard source of Orthodox theology and used for many years as a seminary textbook. The English translation by Fr. Seraphim Rose has made this invaluable sourcebook accessible to those who wish to deepen their understanding of Orthodox Christianity. ORTHODOX DOGMATIC THEOLOGY was written not for academic theologians, but primarily for pastors, and thus it has a practical approach and simplicity of presentation that is missing in many works of contemporary academic theology. In ORTHODOX DOGMATIC THEOLOGY one may see a characteristic of genuine Orthodoxy that is so often lost in our cold, rationalistic age. Theology is not primarily a matter of arguments, criticisms, proofs and disproofs; it is first of all men's word about God, in accordance with the divinely revealed teaching of Orthodoxy

Orthodox Chants from Russia

Orthodox Chants from Russia

$13.98

Orthodox Chants From Russia is a nice album of basic choral chants from the Opina Pustyn Male Choir, formed in St. Petersburg a mere eight or nine years ago. The repertoire of the choir includes some bits of secular music, but here they present solely the spiritual end of things. The album starts with a nice call-and-response rendition of a psalm, then moves into the litany that opens Orthodox services. More pieces of psalms are presented, as are a number of stichera (poetry sung between psalms), ending on a Hail Mary. The performance is kept in a rather austere form throughout the proceedings, but the depth of the voices works well with it to add a level of power. There are some parallels to be heard here with related styles, such as Gregorian chant and Byzantine chant (and even Kosovar Islamic chant), but at the same time there are aspects specific to the Russian version of Orthodoxy. Give it a listen for the beauty of the polyphony. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

Russian Literature

Russian Literature

$10.98

Rather than presenting a conventional chronology of Russian literature, Russian Literature: A Very Short Introduction explores the place and importance in Russian culture of all types of literature. How and when did a Russian national literature come into being? What shaped its creation? How have the Russians regarded their literary language? The book uses the figure of Pushkin--'the Russian Shakespeare'--as a recurring example, as his work influenced every Russian writer who came after him, whether they wrote prose or verse. It furthermore examines why Russian writers are venerated, how they've been interpreted inside Russia and beyond, and the influences of the folk tale tradition, orthodox religion, and the West.

Russian Modernism

Russian Modernism

$54.98

This book interprets the baffling complex of meanings attached by Russian culture to the concept of everyday life, or byt, and assesses its impact on Russian modernist narrative. Drawing on modern literary theory and theology, Stephen C. Hutchings argues that byt emerged from a dialogue between two aesthetic systems, one predominant in Western Catholic and Protestant cultures, the other reflected in Orthodox iconic traditions. He offers provocative, yet careful, readings of key narrative texts from the period.
