Question about the Serenity Prayer?
I'm curious as to the origins of the serenity prayer. Did it originate from Catolicism or perhaps one of the many other various flavors of Christianity? Perhaps even another religion.
I'd like to know the origins to help strengthen a written debate for my mid-term in Philosophy.
On a side note, is there some sort of unwritten rule that if you're a Philosophy Professor you have to be a staunch atheist?
The Serenity Prayer is the common name for an originally untitled prayer, most commonly attributed to the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr.
The philosopher W.W. Bartley juxtaposes Niebuhr's prayer with a Mother Goose rhyme (1695) expressing a similar sentiment, but without comment:[16]
For every ailment under the sun
There is a remedy, or there is none;
If there be one, try to find it;
If there be none, never mind it.
As for your last question, no, I knew a philosophy prof who was a very outspoken christians. But I think that in studying philosophy a lot of people BECOME atheists.
