It also appears as "am israel chai!" (עַם יִשְׂרָאֵל חַי, "The nation of Israel lives!"), referring to all Jews. A popular male name is Chaim and female name Chaya, both derived from the root "Chai". The Chai symbol (חַי) is often worn by Jews around the neck (along with the Star of David, or Magen David). The Torah is referred to as the "Etz Chaim", or Tree of Life. Also, the Torah's wooden handles to which the scroll is attached to are known as the Etz Chaim. A very popular toast in Jewish holidays, Bar-Mitzvahs, weddings, etc, is "Le Chaim!" ( To Life!). And by the way, "to life!" is no small request to Jews. "Chai" has a numerical value of 18. For this reason, 18 is a lucky number in Judaism, and many Jews give charity in multiples of 18 as a result. Did you ever notice how much "Chai", or life, is important and stressed in Judaism? : Wow! Ultra National, I knew all that stuff, I just never really thought of it's significance. But thanks a ton for posting this. You're really smart.
