Pope John Paul II:
He was an officer in the Polish army.. John Paul II was born, Karol Joseph Wojtyla, on May 18th 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. His father was an administrative officer in the Polish army, and his mother was a teacher. His mother died nine years later, and his father died in 1941. When he was thirteen his elder brother died, and he also had an elder sister who died before he was born.
He was by no means the youngest ever pope. The youngest pope, according to official Vatican sources, was John XII (955-964 A.D.) who was elected pope when he was only eighteen years of age. Some sources claim the youngest ever pope was Benedict IX (1032-1044 A.D.), and that he was elected pope at the tender age of twelve. This, however, is disputed by the Vatican who claim that he was nearly twenty years of age. John Paul II, at age fifty-eight, was the youngest pope to be elected in the 20th century, and the youngest since Pius IX who was elected in 1846 aged fifty-four.
In October 1979 John Paul II became the first ever pope to visit the White House where he was received by President Jimmy Carter, who surprised him by greeting him in Polish. Ronald Reagan met John Paul II in June, 1982, and again in June, 1987. President George H.W. Bush met the pontiff in November 1991, and his son, President George W. Bush, met him in June 2004. President Bill Clinton met John Paul II in June 1994.
At age 75, Pope John Paul II has survived numerous accidents and an assassination attempt. As a young man during the German occupation of Poland, he was hospitalized twice, after accidents involving a streetcar and a German army truck. He suffered severe wounds in May, 1981, when shot by Mehmet Ali Agca as he entered St. Peter's Square to address an audience.
