How do organized Christian religious (such as the Catholic Church) feel about Santa Claus?
Doesn't the idea of Santa cause children to lose sight of the REAL meaning of Christmas... to venerate Santa as opposed to Jesus?
Santa Claus is a mockery of Saint Nicholas. The Saint's Bishops miter was changed to a floppy sock hat and his Bishops cope was changed to an elf suit.
Some parents tell their children this story:
"See, there is this white haired man of infinite kindness and charity who lives "up there", and he sees everything and he keeps a list of the people who act right and the people who are evil, and at the end of the year the good people get a reward" .
Kids believe their parents, their ultimate source of safety, security, sustenance and truth.
At some point , when the kids are mature enough the parents tell them "Naugh, None of that is true". But wait I've got a new one for you." And the parents tell the mature child this story
"See, there is this white haired guy of infinite kindness and charity who lives "up there", and he sees everything that happens, and he keeps a list of the people who act right and the people who are evil, and at the end of your life all the good people get a reward" and the bad people get punished!
And do these kids have any reason to believe their parents new story this time around?
