What is a hamsa hand? Or is it called the Hand of Fatima?

When I was in Morocco, the Muslims told me it was called the Hand of Fatima (Muhammad's first wife, as I understand it) and it was supposed to protect from "the evil eye."
But now that I am back in America, I am seeing this symbol more and more. I am wondering what the proper name for it is, and what is generally believed about it. Does anyone know?
Also I am wondering if this is primarily a Muslim symbol or if it goes into other religions as well?

well fatima was the prophet mohammeds daughter. his first wife was kadija to clear that up for you. it is actually a trinket that is suppoed to ward off the evil eye . which is when someone over praises your child,you,anyone and you do not say mashallah(thats what allah has ordained to be.) or if someone becomes jealous of you, your children,spouse , you can become afflicted . you may lose your wealth things like that. but in fact the evil eye is real. but there is no protection except by allah. these trinkets are bidah(inventions) and shirk(associating things with allah hoping it will protect you)when in fact only allah can protect you from the evil eye. believing in these trinkets is a great sin because it is as if you believe a single piece of metal can protect you and save you in some way. just as those believed idols could give and save people. same thing. it is forbidden in islam to believe in or even keep these types of jewelery. but again people invented ways to make money by promising these trinkets protect you. i dont know why moroccans especially have these because they are muslims. it is in no way a muslim symbol but goes against what God orders .. worshipping him alone and associating nothing eith him.
