it's called the flamel cross (also known as the serpent's cross), the crucified serpent represents the creation of a mercury elixir, a "curative," by removing the poisonous element.
it's also one of the symbols flamel used on his grave
EDIT: the wings and crown were added by the author, i believe it stands for "extending beyond" our fake realm of alchemy (where people thought they could turn iron into gold)
