A chocolate Jesus? How do Christians here feel about the below referenced situation?
Outcry cancels chocolate Jesus show
NEW YORK (AP) - A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday after Cardinal Edward Egan and other outraged Catholics complained. The "My Sweet Lord" display was shut down by the hotel that houses the Lab Gallery in midtown Manhattan. Roger Smith Hotel president James Knowles cited the public outcry for his decision.
I've read 9 responses. Humm
could the outcry be something else?
such as the genetalia of the statute having been carved explicitly.... or perhaps that chocolate is brown...
just thinking...
or maybe it is a combination of everything you have mentioned PLUS the immediate above-aforementioned.
OK, I'm a Christian, and I think maybe this artist should have kept his work for a private showing.
It isn't the fact that it is Jesus represented in chocolate that is the problem, Heck, you can buy chocolate Jesi at Wal Mart all day long.
I don't think it is even the fact that he is nude. We all know that Jesus was more than likely naked when He was crucified.
I think that's something we'd rather not display, but truth is truth.
I think it's the combination of the two...the realism and the fact that it was done in chocolate. Choclate is for children, it is candy. Me, I wouldn't buy my kid a regular chocolate Jesus, but I don't mind when people do, it doesn't shock or upset me.
But to have a realistic scene of the crucifixion? No, not even if the guy included the usual modest loin cloth. To do it in children's candy just seems...obscene. Why not include cherry syrub for the blood? I'm afraid seeing such a thing would put me off chocolate for some time to come.
That's just my opinion.
On the other hand, I would just not go to the exhibit, if it bothered me that much. Heck, nobody's paying me to attend, are they?
