how can i make acoustically tuned brass instruments?
i need to make a trombone or something for a physics project. how could i do this or where could i find a website that would help me in this. the hardest part would be the bell, which plays a large part in the sound of the brass, which might force me to choose another instrument
It needs to play a scale, too...not just the frequencies that come naturally to a certain length pipe which would be "lipped up" to
First, I'm assuming you aren't actually trying to exactly duplicate a real instrument - just creates something that makes a reasonable sound in a similar fashion.
If that is the case, then PVC pip works pretty well. The main body can be a straight section of pipe - perhaps 3/4" or 1". For the mouthpiece, just get a straight connector that you can slip over one end. For the bell, get a series of adaptors - hardware store often carry sizes up to 4" diameter.
To tune it, just cut it to the length needed to get the pitch you want. You can also "lip up" to play overtones, but they may not be in tune with real instruments, since the mouthpiece and bell play a subtle role in the overtones that can be produced.
