Is Abalone the same as Mother of Pearl, or does the mollusk genus differ between the two?
My understanding is that Abalone is specifically either from Haliotidae or the genus Haliotis, but that Mother of Pearl (just being the nacreous secretion within a shell) can be from Haliotidae, the Trochidae and the Turbinidae genera.
Also, I thought that Abalone was generally more colourful, or is this just with specific types?
Mother of pearl, or nacre, can come from a variety of freshwater and marine shellfish and mollusks. Abalone (genus Haliotis) produce beautiful nacre, but it is relatively difficult to obtain and their harvest is regulated. Much commercial nacre (for buttons and such) is obtained from less-valuable species like mussels.
